چکیده

This chapter describes and explains common as well as less common distortions in modern video coding, ranging from artifacts appearing in MPEG-2 Video, MPEG-4 Part 2, H.264 and VC-1 to scalable and multi-view video coding based distortions, including the proposals for next generation video coding (NVC). In addition to a discussion about avoiding these artifacts through encoder-side measures, a stateof-the-art overview of their compensation at the decoder side is given. Finally, artifacts emerging from new sophisticated coding tools in current and upcoming video coding standards are discussed.

Fast Intra Mode Decision for Depth Map coding in 3D-HEVC Standard

three dimensional- high efficiency video coding (3D-HEVC) is the expanded version of the latest video compression standard, namely high efficiency video coding (HEVC), which is used to compress 3D videos. 3D videos include texture video and depth map. Since the statistical characteristics of depth maps are different from those of texture videos, new tools have been added to the HEVC standard fo...

Motion vector size-compensation based method for very low bit-rate video coding

In this paper, a new method to achieve better compression efficiency in low bit-rate video coding is proposed. It is based on a global bit-rate reduction at a macroblock level, optimizing the number of bits to code each macroblock as a whole by means of motion vector and headers size compensation. The selection of the best motion vector and different coding modes for each block of the current p...

Embedded optical flow motion compensation and finite state hierarchical vector quantization

We propose a video coding and delivery scheme which is geared towards low bit-rate and real-time performance requirements. We use a finite state wavelet-based hierarchical lookup vector quantization (FSWHVQ) scheme, which embeds the optical flow calculations in table-lookups. This video coding scheme is both fast (table-lookups) and accurate (dense motion field), and avoids the blocking artifac...

New adaptive interpolation schemes for efficient meshbased motion estimation

Motion estimation and compensation is an essential part of existing video coding systems. The mesh-based motion estimation (MME) produces smoother motion field, better subjective quality (free from blocking artifacts), and higher peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) in many cases, especially at low bitrate video communications, compared to the conventional block matching algorithm (BMA). Howev...

Joint Optical Flow Motion Compensation and Video Compression Using Hybrid Vector Quantization

We propose a video coding and delivery scheme which is geared towards low bit-rate and realtime performance requirements. We use a hybrid vector quantization scheme, with finite state wavelet-based hierarchical lookup vector quantization (FSWHVQ) for coding motion vectors, which embeds the Horn and Schunck optical flow algorithm in table-lookups, and uses lattice vector quantization (LVQ) for t...
